My 1 year old cat has black dots (they look exactly like freckles) on her gums...is this tooth decay or could it actually be something as simple as freckles? Do cats have freckles? Her breath doesn't smell and she doesn't seem to have trouble chewing her food. No signs of pain or discomfort either.
Gum decay on my cat?
Yes, my cat has freckles on her pink gums. Weird. But her gums are healthy. Gum disease is a very serious thing for cats and they will have smelly breath. But from time to time open kitty's mouth and look for red to bloody gums and differently bad breath.
Reply:Hi there...she may well have freckles (pigmentation). Some cats will also develop chin acne which begins as black heads and are caused by the bacteria harboured from within the pores of the plastic eating bowls/dishes. Using stainless or glass dishes/bowls prevents this problem.

Reply:Bring to vet. If you do not have enough money, try to give your kitty dental chews for cats. You could probably find them at Pet Smart.
Reply:I have what I thought was an orange ticked tabby cat with orange whiskers, pink nose, pink lips, pink gums. As he got older, he grew black whiskers and had black spots on his nose, his lips, and in his mouth. He's perfectly healthy, but strange. He's a Munchkin (a dwarf) cat, so he was strange to start with.
However, if you're concerned you could ask the vet about it at your cat's next checkup. They could be just freckles, but you can never tell for sure without asking.
Reply:You're not saying whether this is something that recently developed or has always been this way. If it's on the gums and not her chin then yes, this could just be pigmentation. My Exotic Shorthair has black speckles on her pink lower lip - http://www.ferretocious.com/penelope/pen...
