Can sugar alcohol found in chewing gum cause tooth decay or cavities?

No, actually sweeteners like Xylitol and sorbitol help to inhibit the formation of cavities or dental decay, because those sweeteners help to neutralize the acid found in the mouth that appear after eating sugars and starches. Chewing gum with sucrose, what we know as 'table' sugar, causes decay because it is a sticky breeding ground for bacteria growth. Then the bacteria eat through your teeth...-%26gt; cavities. Many recommend chewing sugarless gum after a meal to help prevent cavities also.
