Does a tooth with Root Canal Therapy have the ability to decay any longer?

With the nerve removed, the tooth is essentially dead, but still held in place by (if you are a good brusher and flosser) by the periodontal ligament and bone structure of your jaw. It must still live in the caustic environment of your mouth (so - yes it is still subject to decay) and perform it's duty of mastication under immmense pressure. Over time, this tooth will become brittle. It is for this reason that your dentist will advise you to consider protecting this tooth with a "Crown" - generally fabricated from a high-grade gold alloy with a porcelain coating fused to it (to match the natural color of your teeth). It is important to note that you must floss at least once daily and brush your teeth after every meal to maintain a healthy mouth. Tooth decay is caused by bacteria trapped against your teeth in a sticky matrix called plaque - which begins to form on teeth minutes after you brush. The food you eat feeds this bacteria. So if you have a diet that 2-3 times daily includes processed sugar (sticky sweets/candy, soft drinks, bottled juices/power drinks high in sugar content) and processed "white" carbohydrates (bread, crackers, muffins/donuts, pasta-the digestive enzymes in your saliva convert these carbs into sugar) you will more than likely have a higher incidence of decay - particularly if you don't brush frequently or floss daily. Also take note that if you kiss or otherwise share saliva (fork, glass, toothbrush, mothers will often moisten a soother in their own mouth before putting it in their baby's mouth) with someone who has a active decay or lax oral hygiene you would be exposing yourself to the bacteria that causes tooth decay. If your immune system is compromised or if your own oral hygiene is not adequate, you could be setting yourself up for unnecissary tooth decay and expensive dental bills... I hope that answers your question

Yes. A root canal removes the nerve from the tooth. And initially, it removes the dead or decaying portion of the tooth, but further decay is still possible, including breakage of the remaining shell.
Reply:well i just had a root canal like a day ago and yes it can still decay if you don't do something about it. Best of luck :DDD
