What causes the tooth to decay. What eats away the enamel, what is the chemical action that is happening?

Where are the chemicals coming from that cause the decay. What is the nature of the chemcals?

Our mouths are full of bacteria. Bacteria do the damage to your teeth indirectly. When we eat sugars, bacteria use the sugars to attach themselves to your teeth (biofilms) and they eat the sugars creating an acidic by-product (lactic acid). That acid by-product demineralizes your teeth slowly creating a cavity.
