My friend's sister adopted a puppy through petfinder and her vet gave the dog a shot for it. She is supposed to go back in 3 weeks and get another one. I have never heard of it. Anyone?
Has anyone heard of a puppy shot that supposedly prevents tooth decay?
I have heard of it. It is just a vaccine they are going to start marketing against some bacterias. The drug rep was talking about it to the vet techs one day. The vet won't take the time to talk to him very often.
Reply:A shot to prevent tooth decay? I've never heard of that. I can't find anything about it on google either. Try to get the name of the product if you can. It's usually easier to figure out what it's for.
Reply:No, never ever heard of that!!
Reply:No I have never heard of this either, but it does sound very interesting to learn about.
Reply:This vaccine was apparently released by Pfizer late last year.

It appears that the vaccine targets 3 kinds of bacteria known to cause changes in tooth/bone formation in the jaw.

Frankly, I'm highly skeptical. Pfizer admits they have no idea how long the vaccine's "protection" lasts, and I have always been under the impression that vaccines only protect against viruses, and not bacteria. How can you perpetually kill bacteria with a shot?
I'm against injecting anything into my dogs for no reason. A good quality kibble and access to chew toys (including raw beef bones) has always been enough to keep my dogs' teeth clean.
I wouldn't waste the money.
Reply:Yes, I read about it in a vet journal when it went to trial. I probably won't use it for a year or two because new products always have bugs that need worked out.
Reply:I've heard of it. It's new from Pfizer, however I would wait a few years before giving to my own dogs. Although I'm sure it has been thoroughly tested, I'm very leary of it.
