Tooth decay: If its around the gum line, can it be drilled and filled?

My hubby has quite a few teeth with decay around the gum line. he's got a dentist appt. next friday, and he's just wondering

Tooth decay: If its around the gum line, can it be drilled and filled?
YUP

However, depending on how deep the hole, the teeth may need more work (ie root canals (endodontics))
Reply:I've had this done in the past. I had it drilled out and then they filled it with the white filling stuff. However, these fillings don't seem to last as long for me, I think it's because the filling is so shallow and more just of a surface cover and not deep where it can grab into the nooks and crannies, etc.

However, yes it can be done. I've even had fillings up in where there was no decay but the enamel had wore away and I was expereincing a lot of sensativity.
Reply:Yes. I do this every day of the week. Except Sunday's. And Saturday's. Oh yeah. Never on a Wednesday either. But otherwise, every day of the week.
Reply:yes, definitely..........dental assistant...33 years.
Reply:Yes, you can. Had a few filled myself earlier this year.
Reply:Alot of my family members have had teeth problems and they filled around the gum.Its guaranteed to break. Its always best to crown if the cavity is around the gum.You can fill it but I wouldn't wait to long to crown it there after .Sometimes a broken tooth can end up costing alot to fix.Alot more than a crown .I had cavities around my teeth and I now have eight crowns. You can fill some and crown some now if its a money thing and than replace the fillings one by one with crowns. All I know is that everyone I know got it filled and ignored it and now there teeth are gone.A good dentist will tell you so don't worry
