Tooth decay due to bulimia?

okay so I heard that dentists know how to look for indicators that someone has an eating disorder, specifically bulimia, beacuse of decay or something that happens to the teeth from all the stomach acid.

is this true? my best friend is bulimic and everyone already knows but how would you fix any indicators?

Tooth decay due to bulimia?
I was bulmic which is why at 33 I need a full set of dentures. They (dentist) told me to stop when I was 20 or I would lose all my teeth. They said I should use enamel-on toothpaste to try to repair some of the damage
Reply:Yep, it's very true. And the only way to stop it is to stop binging and purging.
Reply:you can't fix anything. there is no way of stopping the acid from eroding the teeth.
Reply:well the stomach acid would ruin your teeth - You'd have to brush and floss and mouth wash A LOT - which can also be identified though. There's really nothing she can do besides stopping throwing up. It can also cause her throat to bleed.
Reply:you cant fix your teeth without proff.help....she need help soon...
Reply:Yes. This is true. Throwing up i general is rough on your body for it brings up a fair amount of bile, which is VERY acidic. It not only burns your throat (over time can damage vocal chords and throat) it also destroys your teeth. You will lose the enamel on your teeth very quickly with bulimia and dentists are able to tell by the rate of enamel loss and by the staining that occurs. The enamel loss and staining from vomiting differs from that of loss by foods and soda, so its likely he will notice.

All in all, bulimia is bad for every part of your body...
Reply:yes it is true that tooth decay can occur because of someones bulimia. The acid in the stomach causes erosion and exposes the teeth to harmful bacteria and acid that eat away at the enamel.

The only way I could think of to fix the indicators are to brush after throwing up and to maybe get a tooth paste like "enamel-on" which helps build teeth up with more enamel.

Hope this helps.
Reply:Dentists.... may need a surgery or a tooth replacement..
Reply:Yes, this is true and there is no way to turn around tooth decay. The only thing that she can do is go to a dentist to get some treatments for her teeth. And just a question...if everyone knows, then why is she so concerned with her dentist knowing?

She needs to get treatment not just for her teeth but for the bulimia as well. It can have serious long term effects on her health and if it goes on long enough, it can result in death.
Reply:Yes the stomach acids eat the enamel off a person's teeth. A dentist can tell a person's habits by their mouth. Knows if they smoke , if they floss , if they brush. Your dental health is your over all health.
Reply:It is true that bulimia causes tooth decay. It's from the acid in the stomach that they repeatedly throw up- it eats away at their teeth. Why would you want to help her try and cover it up?
Reply:yes. thet stomach acid eats at your gums. and puts you more at risk for gengivites and all them things. there is no way to fix any indicators. only to get help with the eating disorder to fix the prolems
